What each one is
Adobe Launch (now Adobe Tags, folded into the Experience Platform data collection suite) is Adobe's tag management: rules, data elements, extensions, and - via Experience Platform - the Web SDK and Edge Network for server-side collection into Adobe's ecosystem. Tealium is a vendor-neutral Customer Data Hub whose iQ does the tag job with EventStream and AudienceStream behind it. Both are properly enterprise; their gravities point in different directions.
Dimension by dimension
| Dimension | Adobe Launch / Tags | Tealium |
|---|---|---|
| Ecosystem | Deepest with Adobe Analytics / CJA / Target / AEP | Vendor-neutral connector marketplace |
| Cost position | Included with Adobe Experience Cloud commitments | Separate quote-based licensing |
| Data layer model | Data elements; XDM schemas on the AEP path | Universal data object shared across the Hub |
| Server-side path | Web SDK + Edge Network into AEP | EventStream specifications and connectors |
| Identity/audiences | AEP's Real-Time CDP (separate product tier) | AudienceStream inside the same Hub |
| Natural fit | Estates committed to Adobe end-to-end | Estates spanning mixed vendors deliberately |
These are implementation-practice readings, not vendor benchmarks; packaging on both sides shifts and should be verified current.
The deciding questions
- Where does your analytics truth live? Adobe Analytics/CJA estates gain real friction-reduction from staying Adobe-native at the tag layer.
- Is vendor neutrality a policy or a preference? If leadership wants activation across ecosystems without one vendor owning the pipes, that is Tealium's argument in one sentence.
- What is already paid for? Launch effectively rides existing Adobe commitments; Tealium is a new line. Architecture should beat accounting, but accounting attends the meeting.
Full disclosure of perspective: we also run a dedicated Adobe Analytics practice - we work both sides of this decision weekly, which is exactly why neither answer is reflexive.
